Tesla builds first Cybertruck running on lithium refined on U.S. soil

Tesla has built its first Cybertruck using 4680 battery cells made with lithium refined at its own plant in Texas. The official Cybertruck account posted the news late on X. Elon Musk promptly quoted the announcement and responded with just four words: “Lithium made in America.”

The truck marks real milestone in Tesla’s push to control its own battery materials from start to finish. Spodumene ore now moves through the Gulf Coast Lithium Refinery near Corpus Christi, gets converted into battery-grade lithium hydroxide, and feeds Tesla’s 4680 cell lines in Austin. Those cells now sit inside a production Cybertruck built at Giga Texas, so the full chain runs on Tesla’s own ground for the first time.

Tesla has not said how many trucks carry the domestically sourced lithium so far, and it has not given a timeline for extending the material to other models, including the Model Y, which runs on 4680 cells too.

The refinery took years to reach this point

The Robstown site sits on roughly 1,200 acres in Nueces County and marks Tesla’s first large-scale move into raw battery materials refining. Construction broke ground in 2023, and the plant reached full operation in early 2026 after a long ramp-up period. It is the first spodumene-to-lithium-hydroxide refinery in North America.

Tesla says its refining method skips the acid-based process most of the industry uses, and instead converts spodumene concentrate into battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate through an acid-free approach that produces usable byproducts along the way.

The company gave the refinery a bigger spotlight in July at its first Lithium Day event, held on site. Tesla confirmed then that the plant was fully ramped and already shipping battery materials to Giga Texas for 4680 cell production. At the same event, the company unveiled a newly filed patent for a battery recycling process built to pull high-purity materials out of spent cells and manufacturing scrap, so that material can go back into new cathodes instead of being lost.

Batteries have been Tesla’s tightest bottleneck

The company has started producing both the anode and cathode material for 4680 cells using a dry-electrode process that traces back to its 2019 purchase of Maxwell Technologies, a method the company says cuts energy use and factory floor space compared with the wet coating process most competitors still rely on.

Tesla’s finance chief, Vaibhav Taneja, has called battery cell supply the company’s biggest global constraint, and the buildout in Robstown, paired with in-house cathode and anode work, is Tesla’s answer to that problem. Own the ore, own the chemistry, own the cell, and the rest follows.
