Half of Americans Want to Test Drive EVs

A new Consumer Reports survey has revealed a significant milestone in electric vehicle adoption: 50% of prospective car buyers in America express interest in test driving battery electric vehicles during their car shopping journey, regardless of their immediate purchase intentions.

“Test drives can be a really important tool to help consumers better understand new vehicle technologies,” explains Chris Harto, senior policy analyst for transportation and energy at Consumer Reports. “Our research has shown a positive relationship between direct experience with electric vehicles and consumer purchase interest. When you’re shopping for a car, there’s no substitute for firsthand experience.”

The comprehensive study focused on consumer attitudes toward hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles. Among car dealership shoppers, 34% actively seek information about these cleaner vehicle options. The research revealed that potential buyers are particularly interested in understanding battery life and longevity, total ownership costs, and potential fuel savings. Additionally, consumers expressed strong interest in learning about maintenance requirements, insurance considerations, and real-world range performance under varying conditions. Many also sought clarification about available tax credits and rebates, as well as both home and public charging options.

Harto emphasizes the crucial role of dealerships in this transition: “Consumer interest in cleaner vehicle types continues to be strong, but many consumers still have a lot of questions. They need help navigating the rapid technological change occurring in the car market. Dealers are on the front lines of this transition to cleaner vehicles, and they can play an important role in helping consumers understand these new technologies. Dealers that lean into this new role can gain a competitive advantage as fuel-efficient hybrid and zero-emission electric vehicle sales continue to grow.”
