James May Gives Surprising Thumbs Up to Tesla Cybertruck, Suggests Smaller Version

Legendary car presenter and former Top Gear host James May recently shared his thoughts on the Tesla Cybertruck, offering an unexpectedly positive review of the electric vehicle giant’s bold foray into the pickup truck market. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, “James May’s Planet Gin,” May not only praised the Cybertruck but also proposed an intriguing idea for a potential new Tesla model.

May began his review by acknowledging the Cybertruck’s imposing presence, describing it as a “large, wide vehicle that is quite cool.” He highlighted several of the truck’s innovative features, including its steer-by-wire system, four-wheel steering, and other signature Tesla technologies that set it apart from traditional pickups.

However, what truly captured May’s imagination was the Cybertruck’s distinctive design language. The former Top Gear host mused that the vehicle’s aggressively angular aesthetic could be even more appealing if applied to a smaller car, suggesting something around the size of a Ford Focus. May drew a compelling comparison, noting that such a vehicle could evoke the iconic status of the Lamborghini Countach, a poster car that adorned countless bedroom walls in the 1980s.

Despite not being a fan of pickup trucks in general, May admitted to liking the Cybertruck. He acknowledged its polarizing nature while praising its ability to make other vehicles on the road appear mundane by comparison. In a direct appeal to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, May stated:

“I think the Cybertruck is very ballsy and quite humorous, but I am quite glad it exists. And if I can make a little appeal to Elon Musk, ‘Could you make something about the size of the Model Y or maybe even a little smaller—still like a Tesla with all this Tesla stuff in it—but styled like this?’ I’d go for that.”

May’s opinion carries significant weight in the automotive world, particularly when it comes to electric vehicles. Among the three legendary Top Gear hosts, he is often considered the most knowledgeable about EVs. May revealed that he has purchased Teslas in the past, including a Model S 100D and, more recently, a reengineered Model 3.
