Tesla has introduced official vehicle-to-load support for Model Y Premium trims in the United States. This feature enables drivers to draw electricity from the main battery pack to power standard plug-in appliances. The company launched an $80 outlet adapter in its web store, giving owners an easy way to run tools and camping gear directly from the crossover.
The new adapter is selectable as an add-on item during the checkout process on Tesla’s digital design studio. The hardware option is active for new builds across the country. Compatible vehicles listed on the parts catalog include the Model Y Premium, the Model Y Performance, and the Cybertruck line. This feature requires newer refreshed vehicle hardware, so earlier builds assembled before the revised trim naming structure lack the internal components needed to export electricity.
Hardware specifications and cable requirements
The setup connects directly to Tesla’s Gen 3 Mobile Connector bundle, which plugs into the vehicle charging inlet on one end and holds the new adapter on the other. The accessory delivers up to 2.4 kilowatts of electrical current at 120 volts and 20 amps through standard three-prong plugs. Earlier Gen 2 Mobile Connector units lack reverse current circuitry, so they do not work with this adapter. Tesla documentation states that standard warranty terms do not cover damage caused by unapproved third-party bidirectional accessories, which directs drivers toward official company equipment.
Using the equipment requires snapping the adapter into the mobile cable controller, inserting the main handle into the car charge port, and attaching the intended appliance. Owners can start or pause the electricity flow through the center cabin screen or through the mobile app on their smartphones. The charging cord features status lights that stream green away from the vehicle body when the battery is discharging electricity into a connected product. When finished, the user turns off the session, disconnects the plug, holds the handle button until the light turns white, and unplugs the connector so the motorized charge flap closes.
Supported equipment and operational boundaries
The 2.4-kilowatt limit handles common gear like circular saws, portable space heaters, lights, coolers, and electric bicycle chargers. But the system cannot run central home air conditioners or heavy industrial tools that draw beyond the 20-amp limit. The feature is strictly a vehicle-to-load setup for individual products, and it does not include the hardware to backfeed home electrical panels for whole-house emergency backup. Running high-draw appliances over long hours will drain the main driving pack, so drivers need to monitor remaining range before heading back onto the highway.
