Recent reports indicate that Tesla is significantly ramping up production of its refreshed Model Y “Juniper” at Gigafactory Shanghai.
According to Chinese publication LatePost, mass production of the updated Model Y has commenced at the Shanghai facility.
Industry analysts report that the factory has achieved a daily production capacity of 600 units for the refreshed model.
This translates to approximately 4,000 units per week with a seven-day production schedule.
In a move suggesting further production increases, Tesla China is reportedly planning to expand its supply chain capacity.
The company is expected to increase its orders for Model Y door panels from suppliers to 2,400 units per day beginning in early January.
Strategic Significance
The Model Y is Tesla’s highest-selling vehicle and plays a crucial role in the company’s product lineup, despite mainly being sold in its original form.
The potential update, following the pattern of its Model 3 sibling’s refresh, could further strengthen the Model Y’s market position.
This development is significant as the Model Y became the world’s top-selling vehicle in 2023.
Prototype Observations of Juniper
Tesla has kept a low profile on the Model Y update, but refreshed vehicle prototypes have been spotted in both China and the U.S.
A recent sighting featured what seemed to be a Model Y Performance “Juniper” variant, notable for its distinctive red light bar on the rear.
These developments indicate Tesla aims to boost production capacity for the refreshed Model Y, though no official announcements have been made.
