Tesla brings vehicle-to-home backup to Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla has introduced Powershare Home Backup for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, extending a feature that was previously centered on Cybertruck.

The new support applies to Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the U.S. or Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026. Tesla says some vehicles produced before that date may qualify too, so ownership date alone does not determine eligibility.

Tesla Powershare

For homes equipped with Powerwall 3 plus a Tesla Wall Connector, no extra hardware is required for Powershare Home Backup. Tesla’s current installation documentation lists Powerwall 3 systems with either a Universal Wall Connector or Gen 3 Wall Connector as compatible with vehicle-to-home use.

Powershare lets a compatible Tesla send stored battery energy into a home during a grid outage. Tesla says Model 3 or Model Y can extend backup duration by more than two days, with the actual result depending on household energy use, vehicle state of charge, solar equipment, plus the vehicle configuration.

Tesla says a fully charged Cybertruck can keep an average U.S. home running for more than three days, based on estimated daily household use of 30 kWh.

Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ support

Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ owners are not included in the current Powerwall 3 rollout. Tesla’s installation material says those systems can be set up with the required Wall Connector now, with Powershare support planned for a later software release.

Compatibility on the home-energy side is being enabled through an over-the-air update, which lets existing eligible installations gain the feature without a new Powershare Gateway.

Tesla warns against pairing a Powershare Gateway with a Powerwall system. Its installation guide states that homes with Powerwall plus a compatible Wall Connector do not need extra equipment for the feature.

Owners can check compatibility inside the car

Tesla has given Model 3 and Model Y owners a way to confirm support from the vehicle touchscreen.

Open the vehicle controls, go to Software, then select Additional Vehicle Information. A compatible car will have the “Powershare Support” toggle enabled. That check is useful for cars made before October 1, 2026, since Tesla says some earlier Model 3 and Model Y vehicles have the required hardware.

The feature extends Tesla’s bidirectional charging rollout

Powershare allows energy to move out of a vehicle battery rather than limiting the battery to driving or receiving a charge. In a home setup, that creates a vehicle-to-home system that can supplement a Powerwall during an outage.

Tesla, Powerwall 3

Tesla already uses Powershare with Cybertruck for home backup. Its current documentation lists vehicle-to-home use with Powerwall 3 as available, with later support planned for older Powerwall systems.

The company has been adding related battery-output features to newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in several markets. Recent 2027-model vehicles in Australia, for example, have gained Powershare vehicle-to-load capability that lets owners run external electrical devices through an adapter.

The addition is significant mainly because Model 3 and Model Y account for most Tesla vehicle deliveries. Tesla reported 478,237 Model 3 and Model Y deliveries during the third quarter of 2026, compared with 486,532 total vehicle deliveries. Other models accounted for 8,295 units during the quarter.

That puts Powershare Home Backup within reach of a much larger group of customers than the earlier Cybertruck-focused rollout, provided their vehicle plus home setup meets Tesla’s compatibility requirements.

Tesla has not given a public release date for Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ support. Its current technical documentation still lists both as “coming soon,” so those owners will need to wait for the planned software update.
