Tesla is sending out a new software update to its vehicles right now. Version 2026.20 appeared on tracking data on May 30, 2026, and is reaching the global fleet right now.
And this time around, the company focused on families and system security. The download brings a new entertainment block for young drivers, unlisted security patches, and automatic encryption for dashcam footage.
Entertainment blocks for parents
The automaker first released Parental Controls in the 2024.26 update to let owners limit top speed and acceleration. Now, the 2026.20 firmware extends those limits to the screens inside the car. Owners can block access to the web browser, Tesla Theater, and the Arcade gaming apps.

You turn this on by tapping Controls > Safety > Parental Controls on the dashboard screen, but the car must be in Park to make changes. Then, a four-digit PIN locks the settings in place. You can manage the same features through the Tesla mobile app under the Security & Safety menu.
These limits work on the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck, alongside Model S and Model X vehicles built from 2021 onward. Older versions of the S and X do not have the required hardware to support it.
Unlisted security patches
The update carries what Tesla calls “important security fixes and improvements” for all supported vehicle lines. The release notes do not name the exact vulnerabilities patched here.
Default dashcam encryption

Dashcam footage saved to a USB drive is now encrypted by default. This change stops people from plugging the drive into a computer to watch the clips without permission, so the files only play natively on the vehicle that recorded them.
If an owner needs to view the video on a laptop or share it, they can unlock the files. You just tap the padlock icon inside the car’s Dashcam app, or you can go to dashcam.tesla.com to decrypt the clips. Owners who want standard unencrypted video files can turn the whole feature off at Controls > Safety > Encrypt Dashcam Recordings.
Rollout timeline
Tesla has not shared an exact schedule for the rest of the fleet. The company normally sends out software in stages, and engineers monitor the performance data for any issues. Still, drivers can check their download status by opening Controls > Software on the center screen. The wider release should hit more cars in the coming days as the initial tests wrap up.
