Elon Musk and the xAI team have launched their next-gen AI model, Grok 3. The team says Grok 3 is 10 times more capable than Grok 2.
Grok 3 can handle reasoning, research, and creative tasks. At the launch, Musk explained xAI’s goals.
He said,
“The mission of xAI and Grok is to understand the universe and figure out what’s happening, like where the aliens are.”
He added the team is driven by curiosity about how nature works.
Musk said,
“We’re excited to present Grok 3, which we think is much more capable than Grok 2 in a short time. This is thanks to the hard work of an incredible team.”
He also said he’s sure users will love Grok 3.
Grok 3 is rolling out today, starting with X Premium+ subscribers. They’ll be the first to access it. Users need to update their X app to use the new features.
xAI is also introducing a new subscription tier called Super Grok. It’s for enthusiasts who want the most advanced features and early access. This will be available on the Grok app and the new website, grok.com.
What Does Grok Mean?
Musk explained the term “grok” comes from Robert Heinlein’s novel “Stranger in a Strange Land”. It means to fully and deeply understand something, with empathy playing a key role.
Building Grok 3
In April 2024, xAI chose to build its own data center to make the most advanced AI. The team had only four months to finish the project. They said,
“It took us 122 days to get the first 100,000 GPUs running. This is the largest fully connected H1 100 cluster of its kind.”
They later doubled the cluster size in 92 days to improve the product.
How Grok 3 Works
Grok 3 is designed to function in three ways: Think, Big Brain, and DeepSearch.
Think
In the demo, the team asked Grok 3 to solve a physics problem: plotting a trajectory from Earth to Mars and back.
The model took 114 seconds to think and solve the problem. The team said the demo was unscripted, so mistakes could happen, but Grok 3 got it right.
Big Brain
Grok 3’s Big Brain uses creativity. The team asked it to create a new game by combining Tetris and Bejeweled.
Musk said, “Grok is the beginning of creativity.” After the model successfully created the game, Musk announced the launch of an AI gaming studio at xAI and invited people to join.
DeepSearch
Grok 3 can handle hard problems in math, science, and coding. Users can ask Grok 3 to do deep research with DeepSearch. Other AI tools do similar things, but Grok 3 can think longer if needed to give better answers.
Grok 3 Benchmarks
The most important factor to consider in AI is the speed of learning. xAI is learning at a rate that surpasses many other competitors.
Competition in the AI Industry
Grok 3’s launch happens as competition in AI grows. xAI faces big Western companies like OpenAI and Google, as well as Chinese firms like DeepSeek.
DeepSeek’s progress has made others change their plans. For example, OpenAI recently made its first reasoning model free and added Deep Research AI.
Grok 3’s release is important for xAI as it tries to stay ahead in the AI race.
