The FAA has placed a temporary flight restriction over SpaceX’s McGregor test site near Waco, Texas. The restriction runs from September 18 through October 2 and overlaps with Tesla’s planned October 1 Roadster unveiling in the Waco area.
The restricted area covers about 1.5 nautical miles around the McGregor facility, equal to roughly 1.7 miles or 2.8 kilometers. It extends from the surface up to 10,000 feet above ground level.
The FAA lists the notice as a hazard temporary flight restriction. Pilots and drone operators must stay clear of the area unless they qualify for an exception under the applicable FAA rules.
The notice began on September 18 and is set to expire on October 2. That schedule places the airspace closure around the site before, during and after the October 1 Tesla event.
Roadster timing draws attention
Tesla has scheduled its Roadster unveiling for October 1 near Waco. And the FAA action has drawn attention since McGregor sits close to the planned event area. Still, the FAA filing does not name Tesla, the Roadster or a product demonstration. Tesla and SpaceX have not publicly confirmed that the restriction is connected to the event.
The timing alone does not establish the purpose of the TFR. It does, however, put a controlled airspace zone around SpaceX’s Texas test campus during a major Tesla event.
McGregor’s role
SpaceX uses its McGregor facility for rocket-engine testing and related propulsion work. The site has hosted ground tests for years, and FAA airspace restrictions are common around hazardous aerospace operations.
Past FAA notices tied to SpaceX operations have restricted aircraft near Texas test and launch sites. In some notices, SpaceX has appeared as the listed point of contact for the restricted operation.
That context leaves open several possible reasons for the McGregor restriction. A routine SpaceX test could be involved, but no public filing has confirmed the activity planned inside the restricted zone.
Thruster talk remains unconfirmed
Some Tesla and space-focused outlets have connected the TFR with long-running talk of a Roadster package using SpaceX-derived cold-gas thrusters. Reports have discussed a system intended to provide brief bursts of thrust beyond conventional tire-driven acceleration.
But there is no public confirmation that Tesla will demonstrate such hardware on October 1. The Roadster’s specifications, event program and any involvement by SpaceX remain undisclosed.
The confirmed facts are limited. The FAA restriction is active, it covers the McGregor site through October 2, and Tesla’s Roadster event is scheduled during that period. Any direct connection between the two remains unconfirmed.
