The new showroom is located at Maker Maxity Mall, Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. Tesla is selling two models of the Model Y:
- Model Y RWD – ₹59.89 lakh ex-showroom (around $69,700)
- Model Y Long Range RWD – ₹67.89 lakh ex-showroom (around $79,000)
The on-road price in Mumbai comes to ₹61.07 lakh for the standard RWD and ₹69.15 lakh for the Long Range RWD. These cars are being imported from Tesla’s factory in Shanghai.
Bookings and Delivery Plans
Tesla has started taking orders. Booking costs ₹22,222. Deliveries for the standard RWD begin in Q3 2025. The Long Range RWD version will be delivered in Q4 2025. For now, Tesla will sell in three cities: Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.
Specs and Features
The Model Y RWD can go up to 500 km (WLTP range) on a full charge. It takes 5.9 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h. The Long Range RWD has a range of 622 km and is a bit quicker at 5.6 seconds for 0 to 100 km/h. Top speed for both is 201 km/h.
Both models come with:
- A 15.4-inch touchscreen in front
- An 8-inch display in the back
- Heated and ventilated seats
- 360-degree cameras
- 7 airbags
- Panoramic glass roof
- Driver assistance features
- Over-the-air software updates
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is offered for ₹6 lakh ($7,000), but it can’t be used without India’s government approval. The software is still being tested on Indian roads.
Charging Network Plans
Tesla will set up charging points in the same cities where it’s selling cars:
- Mumbai: 4 charging locations, 16 Superchargers, and 16 destination chargers
- Delhi: 4 locations, 16 Superchargers, and 15 destination chargers
Buyers also get a free wall charger. Tesla’s V4 Superchargers add up to 267 km of range in 15 minutes.
Comparison with Other Premium EVs
The Model Y is priced higher in India than in other countries, mainly because of import duties. In the US, the same car starts at $44,990. Here, prices are up by about $15,000 due to India’s import taxes.
India charges a 70% import duty on fully built electric cars under $40,000 and 100% for those over that. It puts the Model Y in the luxury EV group. Tesla’s competitors in this space include:
- Kia EV6 – ₹65.97 lakh, 663 km range
- BMW iX1 – ₹49 lakh, 531 km range
- BYD Sealion 7 – ₹48.90 to ₹54.90 lakh, 567 km range
- Mercedes-Benz EQA – ₹67.20 lakh, 560 km range
Sales Forecast and Market Outlook
Only 12,000 luxury EVs were sold in India last year, but demand is growing. Analysts expect Tesla to sell up to 700 units in the first few months, then about 200 to 300 units each month later.
India’s luxury EV market is still small, but Tesla’s arrival could push other brands to compete harder.
Tesla plans to open its second store in Delhi later this month. There are no plans for manufacturing in India right now. Tesla’s cars will continue coming from China.
India’s Minister for Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, said Tesla hasn’t shown interest in local production yet.
All staff for Tesla India will be from India, according to Isabel Fan, director of Tesla Southeast Asia. She said this during the Mumbai showroom opening.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature won’t be available to use at launch. The system is still adjusting to Indian traffic and road patterns. Government approval is needed before it becomes active.
