Tesla Plans Robotaxi Network Launch in June

Tesla has been working on Full Self-Driving (FSD) without supervision for a while.

This version, called FSD Unsupervised, allows the car to handle the entire trip on its own, so the driver doesn’t have to pay attention or keep their hands on the steering wheel.

At Tesla’s Q4 2024 earnings call, the company announced plans to launch FSD Unsupervised in June 2025. Here’s what to expect.

Robotaxi Fleet Launch

Tesla will start its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. At first, only Tesla’s own vehicles will use FSD Unsupervised. Regular Tesla owners won’t be able to access it or join the fleet yet.

The Robotaxi service will work like Waymo’s, a paid ride-hailing option. Tesla will use this to improve the experience, from ordering a ride on the app to payment after the trip.

Tesla is being careful with this rollout. Even a small accident could lead to big regulatory problems. So, The company wants to make sure FSD Unsupervised is much safer than human drivers before expanding it.

After Austin, Tesla plans to bring the service to California and other parts of the U.S., pending regulatory approval.

When Can Owners Join?

Tesla plans to let owners add their cars to the Robotaxi fleet starting in 2026.

This will happen at least six months after the initial launch, but it depends on local rules and approvals.

Elon Musk mentioned Tesla needs to be very confident in the system’s safety before letting owners use FSD Unsupervised. He didn’t talk about liability, which is a big question for self-driving cars.

Tesla’s VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, and Musk both noted that even one small incident with FSD Unsupervised would make global headlines, even though regular car accidents rarely do.

FSD Unsupervised for Owners

Tesla won’t release FSD Unsupervised for owners right away. They’ll test it with their fleet first. Owners might get access in late 2026 or 2027.

Tesla aims for FSD Unsupervised to be ten times safer than the average human driver.

Right now, Tesla’s FSD and Autopilot already have fewer incidents per mile than human drivers.

Musk joked that people often switch to manual driving to check their phones, which isn’t safe. FSD Unsupervised could help fix that.

“People go to manual driving to check their phone so that they don’t strike out/get beeped at – and then go back to FSD.”

Launch Phases

We can expect Tesla may roll out FSD Unsupervised in phases:

  1. Internal testing (already happening)
  2. Launch the Robotaxi network in small areas
  3. Expand and improve the network
  4. Let owners add their cars to the fleet
  5. Offer FSD Unsupervised to all Tesla owners

Tesla is testing FSD Unsupervised at its Fremont factory, where cars drive themselves from the production line to the delivery lot. They’re also testing it in downtown LA with safety drivers.

The June 2025 launch might start small, with only employees or limited areas. But Tesla often improves features quickly, so expect updates and expansions soon after.

We’re excited to see Tesla’s Robotaxis in action. It’s a big step for self-driving technology.
