In a recent episode of the Ride the Lightning podcast, Tesla’s VP of Engineering, Lars Moravy, answered a big question: what’s happening with the Model S and Model X?
Tesla’s engineering and design teams have been working on updates for these models. They’ve heard the demand for a refresh, and changes are coming to Tesla’s flagship vehicles.
Lars also confirmed that Tesla has no plans to stop making the Model S and Model X. They’re staying in production, and a refresh is on the way.
“Just give it a minute, we’ll get there” – Lars Moravy
Refreshed Flagships
According to Lars, the Model S and Model X will get updates later this year. Right now, Tesla’s main focus is launching a more affordable next-generation vehicle by early 2025.
The refresh will likely include upgrades seen in the updated Model 3 and Model Y.
Here’s what we might expect:
Interior Updates
The Model X & Model S could get features inspired by the Cybertruck. This might include removing the driver’s gauge cluster and using a larger center screen, similar to the Cybertruck’s design. Unlike the Model 3 and Y, this screen won’t tilt, making production simpler.
These changes could make the vehicles easier to repair and service. There’s also a chance the refresh will include ambient lighting, which is now standard in Tesla’s lineup.
Tesla might also switch to a 48V low-voltage electrical system, like the one in the Cybertruck. This could bring steer-by-wire technology, making the yoke steering wheel easier to use.
Exterior Updates
The exterior changes aren’t fully clear. A complete redesign probably won’t happen, but updates to the front and rear fascias are possible, similar to the new Model Y.
Tesla will likely keep the Model S’s iconic look but could add features like a light bar, seen in the Cybertruck and updated Model Y.
FSD Hardware Changes
The refresh might coincide with Tesla’s next-gen FSD hardware, AI5. While Tesla hasn’t fully used AI4 yet, AI5 could be ready in about 18 months, as Elon Musk mentioned in June 2024. The Cybercab, launching this summer, will include AI5.
The Model S and X might also get a front bumper camera, like the updated Model Y. Tesla could remove the HD radar currently included but not used in these vehicles.
Drivetrain and Battery
The Model S and Model X still use an older air suspension system, which can cause uneven tire wear due to camber changes. The Cybertruck’s updated suspension handles this better, and similar improvements could come to the Model S and X.
Tesla might also adopt the Cybertruck’s 800V high-voltage architecture, allowing faster charging, possibly up to 500kW at V4 Superchargers.
New Production Lines
Rumors suggest Tesla is upgrading the Model S and Model X production lines at Fremont. These upgrades are likely part of getting ready for the refreshed versions.

What’s Next
More details about the refreshed Model S and X will probably come later this year, possibly after the Cybercab and Tesla’s more affordable model launch.
There’s also talk of the Plaid Plus variant returning, which could compete with electric hypercars like the Lucid Air Sapphire.
Tesla has big plans, but we’ll need to wait a few more months for solid updates.
