Tesla may introduce wireless Apple CarPlay support soon

Tesla is testing Apple CarPlay in its electric cars. The feature might arrive soon, but no release date has been set. If Tesla rolls it out, this would be a big change from its earlier strategy, since it has never allowed phone mirroring before.

For years, Elon Musk said his company would not use CarPlay or Android Auto. He believed Tesla’s software worked better and kept control over the driving experience. Many car owners, though, kept asking for CarPlay.

Testing details

Reports say Tesla is running internal tests right now. CarPlay would appear in a window on the big touchscreen, so Tesla’s system stays in control. This keeps features like Full Self-Driving visualizations on-screen, while you can use your phone for music, podcasts, and navigation. There is no news yet about support for Android Auto.

Wireless connection

Tesla will use the standard version of CarPlay, not the new “Ultra” version. With wireless CarPlay, you won’t need cables. This matches what luxury brands already offer. CarPlay Ultra would let Apple control climate and instrument screens, but Tesla wants to keep those in its own system.

One strong reason for change is customer opinion. Surveys from last year say that about one in three car shoppers will pass on a car that does not have CarPlay or Android Auto. As sales have dropped recently, Tesla sees CarPlay as a way to win back customers who felt locked out.

Uncertainty ahead

Tesla could still cancel the project. There is hope among owners, since many rivals already offer CarPlay on their electric models. Even so, the final plan is not confirmed, and only future updates will show if it sticks.

Tesla’s infotainment system supports streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music. Still, many drivers prefer using CarPlay for messaging, calling, navigation, and their favorite phone apps. With CarPlay, notifications and calls will appear on the car’s display, and the connection will be seamless. If it works well, drivers will be able to choose whatever apps fit their routines best.

Tesla wants CarPlay to run in a window, so its main functions stay active. This approach helps keep important vehicle features available to drivers, even while using their phone apps. That way, buyers get more options without losing what makes Tesla unique.

Tesla has stayed away from CarPlay for a long time. While it’s still just a test, signs point to Tesla trying to satisfy more drivers by allowing their phones to work inside its cabins.
