Tesla has started its first Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program in the United Kingdom. This program lets homeowners with solar panels and Powerwall battery systems sell extra energy back to the grid and earn money for doing so.
Tesla’s VPP allows people who have installed solar panels and Powerwalls to store unused energy. When the grid needs power, Tesla can draw from these home batteries and pay the owners for the electricity they provide. Tesla teamed up with Octopus Energy, a renewable energy supplier active in several countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the United States.
Earnings for Participants
Those who take part in the program can make up to £300 per month by sharing their stored energy with the grid. This helps reduce bills and gives homeowners a return on their investment in solar and battery systems.
This UK launch is Tesla’s first VPP program there, but the company already runs similar projects in the U.S. states of California, Texas, Connecticut, and Puerto Rico. Tesla also operates VPPs in Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. The company began working on VPPs back in Australia in 2019. Through all its programs, Tesla has paid out over $10 million to participants in 2024 alone.
Tesla joins other energy technology companies using Octopus Energy’s platform for VPPs in the UK. These include SolarEdge, GivEnergy, and Enphase.

As Tesla said on their UK X account, this program creates a “win-win” situation. Homeowners earn money while helping the grid stay stable and cleaner by using renewable energy.
