Tesla Plans to Keep Robotaxi Services In-House, Says Uber CEO

Tesla is moving ahead with its own robotaxi ride-hailing service and has no plans to work with Uber, according to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

No Interest in Uber Partnership

Khosrowshahi recently spoke with Elon Musk and said Tesla is not interested in using Uber’s platform for robotaxis. A report from Fortune confirms this. Tesla is sticking to its own ride-hailing plans, which it has been developing for years.

Competing with Waymo and Uber

Tesla’s decision puts it in direct competition with companies like Waymo, Uber, and Amazon-owned Zoox. Waymo already operates paid driverless ride-hailing services in several U.S. cities.

“We and Waymo will be competing with Tesla when they launch,”

Khosrowshahi said during a Bloomberg TV interview in Miami.

“Life is long, but we would love to partner with them.”

He added that working together could make financial sense. Uber could help Tesla manage demand, which varies throughout the day.

Tesla’s Ride-Hailing Progress

Tesla showed a preview of a ride-hailing app in April 2024 during its Q1 shareholder update. It is already testing a ride-hailing service with employees in California’s Bay Area and near its factories in Texas.

In October, Tesla revealed the Cybercab, a two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel. The vehicle is expected to roll out alongside an “Unsupervised” version of Full Self-Driving (FSD) starting in June.

Signs of an Upcoming Tesla App

Earlier this month, Tesla added a new ride-hailing rating screen to its software. This suggests a consumer launch is coming, though there is no timeline yet.
