Tesla expands Robotaxi geofence in Austin

Tesla has made its Robotaxi service area in Austin much bigger. The new geofence now covers almost twice as much ground as before. It went from around 52 square kilometers to 109. This puts Tesla’s coverage close to what Waymo offers in the city. Elon Musk talked about this update last week. The change rolled out over the weekend.

The pilot program started on June 22. Tesla used 10 to 20 Model Y cars with safety monitor behind the wheel.

The Robotaxi now works in more parts of Austin. It includes places like the University of Texas at Austin. This could mean more students will use the service soon. The price for a ride is still $4.20.

Unusual geofence shape

People noticed the new geofence outline looks like a phallus. This was not an accident. Investor Steve Mark Ryan made a joke about the shape, and Musk and the Tesla team liked the idea. Musk posted about it on X, saying the service is “bigger, longer, and uncut.”

The Robotaxi account added, “harder, better, faster, stronger.” Some fans found this funny. Some critics did not like it.

App updates

Tesla’s Robotaxi app was also updated to version 25.7.5. Now users get walking directions to and from the car. The app shows if a place will be closed when you get there. You can also change your destination after you book a ride.

Catching up with Waymo

Tesla started its Robotaxi service in Austin less than a month ago. Before this, the service area was much smaller than Waymo’s. Now, with the bigger geofence, Tesla is closer to matching Waymo’s coverage in Austin. The company is getting more attention, both for the larger area and the shape of the new boundary.
