Tesla bumps up discounts on older Model Ys

Tesla has raised discounts on its legacy Model Y vehicles in the US. As of March 22, 2025, buyers can save up to $8,820 on new ones. That includes a $500 discount from Tesla’s referral program. Demo models now get up to $9,200 off. This push comes as Tesla shifts to the new “Juniper” Model Y and works to sell off the last of the older stock.

What’s the legacy Model Y?

The legacy Model Y is the version Tesla made before the Juniper update. It hit the market in 2020 and became Tesla’s top seller. People liked its range, price, and usefulness. Now, with the Juniper bringing a new look, better interior, and possibly more efficiency, Tesla wants to clear out the older design.

Why now?

The first quarter of 2025 ends soon. Tesla often ramps up sales at quarter’s end to hit delivery goals and keep Wall Street happy. Bigger discounts help move the leftover legacy Model Ys fast. It also clears the way for the Juniper to take over.

How the discounts work

New legacy Model Ys get up to $8,820 off. That’s Tesla’s price cut plus the $500 referral bonus for using a code from a current owner. Demo units, like those used for test drives, see $9,200 off. These deals are a bit higher than before, but Tesla hasn’t said how much they went up.

Stock running low

The legacy Model Y is selling out quick. Some areas in the US already have none left. Buyers need to move fast if they want one. The discounts make it a good deal, and demand for Tesla vehicles stays high.

What Tesla gains

Selling off the old stock helps Tesla in a few ways. It boosts Q1 numbers and makes room for the Juniper. The new version has people talking with its updates, and Tesla wants it front and center. Also, Clearing inventory keeps things smooth as production shifts.

Tesla’s pricing edge

Tesla sells straight to buyers, not through dealers. This lets them change prices fast. They can drop costs or add discounts like now. The referral program also pulls in new customers through existing ones.

A chance for buyers

These discounts open the door for more people. Saving $8,820 on a new Model Y or $9,200 on a demo cuts the price a lot. But with stock disappearing, buyers should check Tesla’s website or call local centers to see what’s left.

Tesla’s focus on selling these legacy units shows they adapt quick and keep their lineup current. The discounts, even with a small bump, aim to wrap up this Model Y phase. For anyone shopping, time’s short – stock is low, and Q1 ends soon.
