Recent footage from Chinese media offers a detailed view of Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory, suggesting it is set to start Megapack production in Q1 2025.
The video footage showcases a completed main structure along with finished surrounding infrastructure, including access roads.
Construction Progress and Worker Confirmation
Facility workers in the footage confirmed that all equipment has been installed and that the focus is now on commissioning and trial production.
A worker stated,
‘It’s almost done. Now we’re focused on commissioning and trial production. 100% of the equipment has been installed!'”

Record-Breaking Construction Timeline
The construction timeline of the Shanghai Megafactory represents a significant achievement in Tesla’s manufacturing history.
Following its ceremony in late May 2024, the facility is set for full completion in about seven months, marking a new record for Tesla’s construction speed.
This timeline greatly exceeds Giga Shanghai’s construction efficiency, which took nearly twelve months from its January 2019 start to vehicle production.
Production Capacity and Strategic Impact
The Shanghai Megafactory will serve as a crucial production center for Tesla’s Megapack battery storage systems.
With a projected annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapack units, or 40 GWh of energy storage, the facility will significantly boost Tesla’s energy storage capabilities.
This new production capacity effectively doubles Tesla’s Megapack manufacturing, complementing the Lathrop Megafactory in California, which also produces 10,000 units annually.
Strategic Significance
This expansion strategically enhances Tesla’s global energy storage network, with the Shanghai facility set to meet the rising demand for large-scale energy storage solutions.
