Tesla is building a new factory for its Megapack battery storage system in Waller County, Texas. The plant will be in the Empire West Industrial Park in Brookshire. The news came from a Waller County Commissioners Court meeting on March 5.
Tax Agreement and Job Creation
Local officials approved a tax abatement deal to bring Tesla to the area. The project is expected to create around 1,500 jobs. Brookshire officials will vote on a separate tax abatement for Tesla next Thursday.
Factory Details
The new factory will be a one-million-square-foot building. Tesla will use it to make Megapack battery storage units. Covering Katy News first reported on Tesla’s plan to expand its energy product manufacturing.
Elon Musk had mentioned this project in Tesla’s Q4 2024 Earnings Call in January. He said the company was building a third Megapack factory but did not say where. Now, it’s clear that Texas is the location.
High Demand for Megapack
More regions are looking for energy storage to prevent power outages. Megapacks store electricity and provide backup power when the main grid goes down.
Vince Yokom, from the Waller County Economic Development Partnership, welcomed the project.
“I want to thank Tesla for investing in Waller County and Brookshire. This will be a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for their Megapack product. It is a powerful battery unit that provides energy storage and support to help stabilize the grid and prevent outages.”
Tesla has had a lease on the building since October 2021. Until now, a third-party logistics company used it for handling Tesla car parts.
