xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, launched Grokipedia. Grokipedia is a website where an AI writes articles. The platform calls itself a place for “the complete truth.” Right now, it has about 885,279 articles, while Wikipedia still much bigger and has more than seven million. Still, Grokipedia’s launch made noise because it aims to challenge Wikipedia, which Musk says is too political.
Grokipedia works differently from Wikipedia. All articles are generated, checked, and updated by xAI’s Grok language model. No volunteers make direct edits, but people can send suggestions using a form. Musk says Grokipedia will keep updating to remove “propaganda.” Many articles look identical to Wikipedia pages and include a notice that says so. Everything on Grokipedia is under the same license as Wikipedia.
How the launch went
The launch had problems. The site crashed soon after going live, but it did return later. Grokipedia called itself “version 0.1” and said version 1.0 would be much better. Users found a simple homepage with a search box.

Some pointed out that a lot of the content seemed to be directly copied from Wikipedia, but dressed up with Grokipedia’s own look.
What’s different about Grokipedia
Grokipedia claims its AI can remove political bias, delivering “truthful” articles. Still, early reports say many articles either avoid details or push a perspective that matches Musk’s public views. For instance, some critical stories about Musk are missing from his entry on Grokipedia, even when Wikipedia lists them clearly.
Reactions are mixed. Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, said Grokipedia is “very OK” but isn’t sure if it’s better than Wikipedia. Some users find Grokipedia less biased, at least in some political topics, but say it needs a lot of work. The Wikimedia Foundation said, “Wikipedia’s knowledge is, and always will be human… This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content, even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
Who controls Grokipedia
Only the Grok AI can create or edit articles. Musk has said public users may be able to suggest changes in the future, but right now, all content is AI-generated. Grokipedia’s connection to Wikipedia is clear, many articles are still copied, and it depends on Wikipedia’s openly licensed information.
Musk promises that Grokipedia will grow and get better. He suggests future versions will be “10x better” and address current flaws. Even so, questions about accuracy, fairness, and reliability will not disappear soon. The argument over who gets to decide what is true human editors or AI will likely grow along with the platform.
