Tesla, the electric car company run by Elon Musk, is no longer part of the Vancouver International Auto Show. The event started today, March 19, 2025, at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
Organizers made the call to remove Tesla on March 18 after protests and safety worries tied to Musk’s public image grew.
Eric Nicholl, the show’s executive director, said Tesla had chances to pull out on its own. He explained the choice was about keeping everyone safe.
“The Vancouver Auto Show’s primary concern is the safety of attendees, exhibitors, and staff,”
Nicholl stated.
“This decision will ensure all attendees can be solely focused on enjoying the many positive elements of the event.”
The show runs through March 23 and usually brings in big crowds of car fans.
Protests fuel the decision
The removal comes after “Tesla Takedown” protests hit Canada. Demonstrations popped up in Vancouver and Surrey over the weekend before the show. People are upset about Musk advising U.S. President Donald Trump. He’s leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) since Trump took office. New U.S. tariffs – 25% on Canadian goods – have made tensions worse, and Tesla’s catching the heat.
BC Hydro steps back too
Tesla’s had other trouble in British Columbia lately. On March 11, BC Hydro said Tesla cars won’t get rebates anymore. Premier David Eby tied it to Musk directly.
“If tens of thousands of taxpayers’ money was going to Elon Musk, they would want to throw up,”
Eby said. Musk fired back on X, calling it “crazy.”
Safety worries at the show
Anti-Tesla feelings are spreading. Vandalism has hit Tesla stores and cars across North America. Nicholl didn’t list specific threats, but his focus on safety hints at fears of trouble at the event. Tesla’s display was already up at the convention center. It got taken down after the announcement.
A rare move for auto shows
Kicking an automaker out of a big show like this doesn’t happen often. The Vancouver event is a top car exhibition in North America. It’ll go on without Tesla. No word yet on refunds for ticket holders who wanted to see the brand.
