Tesla sent out a recent email suggesting that the Model Y might soon offer seating for up to seven people. The message said the vehicle has
“long range, seating for up to seven and enough room for everyone’s gear.”
This strongly hints that Tesla is planning to bring back the third-row option that was removed during the 2025 update.
History of the 7-Seat Model Y
The Model Y first got a seven-seat version in 2021. The third row had forward-facing seats and could fold flat. It wasn’t very spacious and worked better for kids than adults. While it stayed available in North America for some time, it was later removed from other markets like Europe and China.
New Features Could Improve Comfort
The updated Model Y now includes power-reclining second-row seats. These are controlled through the central touchscreen. It’s possible that Tesla will bring similar controls to the third row in the upcoming version, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
The new seating option hasn’t shown up on Tesla’s website yet. Still, the email makes it clear that it’s likely coming soon. This update could make the Model Y more appealing to families and larger households.

Earlier this year, Tesla faced a dip in sales. Offering more seating and added utility could help bring in more buyers. A third row gives drivers more space without pushing them to buy a bigger and more expensive SUV like the Model X.
Tesla hasn’t shared how much the new seating option will cost. It’s also unclear whether it will be available with all versions of the Model Y or only higher-end models.
Tesla hasn’t officially announced the return of the 7-seat option. But the language in its email suggests it’s on the way soon. Customers can expect more details once the configuration shows up online.
