Tesla is working on a better way to talk to your car. A recent software update hints that Tesla plans to add Grok, an AI assistant made by xAI to its vehicles. This won’t be just another voice assistant. It will let drivers choose how the assistant sounds and acts.
Voice options with personality
Tesla’s update, found by a well-known software researcher who goes by “green,” shows that Grok may offer different personalities. These include:
- assistant
- argumentative
- conspiracy
- doctor
- kids_story
- kids_trivia_game
- storyteller
- meditation
- motivation
- romantic
- unhinged

This means the car could respond in different styles, depending on what the user picks. For example, one setting might be better for calm answers, and another for playful stories.
More than just voice commands
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Grok will understand natural voice commands. He said:
“You’ll be able to talk to your Tesla and ask for anything”.
This feature may work both while driving and when the car is in Full Self-Driving mode.
Who will get it first?
Based on the code, it looks like only newer Teslas with AMD chips will get Grok at first. Older Teslas with Intel systems may not support it yet.
Tesla seems to be preparing for its future Robotaxi service. Having an assistant that sounds more human and feels personal may be a step toward that. Giving users voice options could help the assistant feel less like a machine and more like a real part of the car.
Grok was launched in late 2023. It’s known for replying with humor and sometimes sarcasm. Adding it to Tesla’s cars could make voice interaction smoother and more flexible.
For now, this feature isn’t available to drivers. But the update shows that Tesla is actively working on it.
