Tesla has released its Q3 2024 Vehicle Safety Report, revealing impressive safety statistics for its fleet.

Vehicles using Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology averaged one crash per 7.08 million miles driven, while Teslas without these features engaged recorded one crash per 1.29 million miles. Both figures significantly outperform the national average of one crash per 670,000 miles, according to NHTSA data.

The company’s safety performance demonstrates a consistent upward trend, with historical data showing improvement from 3.85 million miles per crash in Q3 2019 to 5.5 million in Q3 2021. Tesla achieved its best performance in Q1 2024 with 7.6 million miles per crash, followed by a slight dip to 6.8 million in Q2, before showing recovery in Q3.

Tesla’s comprehensive safety package, which has drawn attention from Arizona’s Department of Transportation for its extensive features, includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Avoidance, and Collision Avoidance Assist.

These systems operate through Tesla’s vision-based FSD system and receive regular software updates. Notably, even older Tesla models from 2016 have benefited from improvements to their Automatic Emergency Braking systems.

The company maintains its commitment to safety by making all safety features standard across its vehicle lineup.

When combined with their unique vision-based self-driving system, the data suggests Tesla vehicles are substantially safer than average vehicles on the road, with Autopilot/FSD users being 10.5 times less likely to experience an accident compared to the average U.S. driver.
