Tesla has achieved a significant milestone in its battery production, announcing the manufacture of its 100 millionth 4680 battery cell across all its factories. This achievement comes just over three months after the company reached the 50 million cell mark, showcasing a rapid acceleration in production.

Tesla shared this news on its official X account, accompanied by an image of an Optimus Gen 2 humanoid robot holding the 100 millionth 4680 cell.

This milestone has impressed industry observers who have been closely monitoring Tesla’s 4680 program. The company’s previous announcement of 50 million cells produced at Giga Texas came on June 5, 2024. In the 101 days since then, Tesla appears to have maintained an average production rate of approximately 495,000 4680 cells per day.

To put this into perspective, each Cybertruck requires 1,344 4680 cells. At the current production rate, Tesla could theoretically produce about 368 Cybertrucks daily, or 2,578 per week.

Battery enthusiast “The Limiting Factor” estimated on X that this production rate could potentially support the manufacture of 33,514 Cybertrucks per quarter, or roughly 134,280 units annually.

Despite this impressive battery production rate, recent estimates suggest Tesla is still approaching a production rate of 2,000 Cybertrucks per week. This indicates that 4680 cell supply may no longer be the primary bottleneck for Cybertruck production. It’s possible that Tesla is stockpiling cells in preparation for increased Cybertruck production following the conclusion of the Foundation Series.

The 4680 battery cell program, first announced at Tesla’s 2020 Battery Day event, faced initial delays. However, earlier this year reports from China suggested that Tesla plans to begin mass production of the “complete” version of the 4680 cell featuring dry positive and negative electrodes by the end of 2024.

This latest milestone demonstrates Tesla’s commitment to advancing battery technology and scaling production to meet the demands of its growing electric vehicle lineup.
