Tesla has taken a significant step to address the shortage of electric vehicle (EV) charging options in New York City by acquiring a 40,000-square-foot lot in Queens for $18 million. This move is part of the company’s broader initiative to enhance the EV ownership experience in one of America’s most densely populated urban centers.
The Commercial Observer first reported the land acquisition, which was finalized by Max de Zegher, a key executive in Tesla’s Supercharging division. De Zegher, who briefly left the company in April before being reinstated in May, played a crucial role in securing this deal.
New York City has become a hotbed for EV adoption, particularly among ride-sharing drivers for platforms like Lyft and Uber, driven by various municipal incentives. However, the city’s notorious real estate scarcity has posed significant challenges to expanding the necessary charging infrastructure.
Earlier this year, Tesla announced plans to build additional Supercharger locations across New York’s boroughs, including Staten Island and Brooklyn. This expansion aligns with the company’s commitment to support the city’s transition towards a zero-emissions fleet.
The city’s own transportation strategy complements Tesla’s efforts. Plans are in place to install 13 fast-charging hubs and a charging depot in the Bronx, as well as 30 fast chargers at the Taxi and Limousine Commission’s Woodside inspection facility.
