Tesla Updates Heated Steering Wheel with Smarter Auto Mode

Tesla has updated its heated steering wheel feature in the 2024.14 software update. This change improves how the system works, especially in cold weather.

Before this update, the heated steering wheel only turned on by itself if both the wheel and the car’s climate system were set to Auto mode. Many drivers found this frustrating when they wanted to control the cabin temperature manually but still wanted the steering wheel heat to turn on automatically.

Now, that’s no longer an issue. The wheel heater can work in Auto mode based on how cold it is inside the car, no matter how the rest of the climate settings are set. Tesla’s release notes say, “If the steering wheel heater is set to Auto, the steering wheel will now heat up based on the cabin temperature, even if the climate system is set manually.” This gives drivers more comfort without needing to switch everything to Auto.

The update applies to every Tesla model currently being made: Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. So it’s not just limited to certain trims or price levels. It’s available across the board.

History of the Feature

Tesla first added a heated steering wheel to the Model 3 in early 2021. It came with other small changes, like USB-C ports. At the start, the wheel had just one heat setting and a simple on/off switch. It worked, but there wasn’t much room for adjustment.

Tesla has since worked on making it better. Plans were shared earlier showing options for low, high, and Auto heat levels, just like the heated seats. These settings give drivers more control and let the car adjust the heat automatically when needed.

How It Works Now

You can turn on the heated wheel through the touchscreen > Tap the fan icon > then select the steering wheel icon. If you choose Auto, the system will heat the wheel using cabin temperature data. You don’t have to do anything else. It works in the background.

The heating elements are built into key spots on the wheel, especially at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. These are the areas where most drivers place their hands. Some owners say those spots feel warmer, which matches where the heaters are located.

This update is part of a larger package in version 2024.14. It includes other upgrades like user interface tweaks and new entertainment tools. All of it gets delivered over-the-air while your car is parked.

This new heated steering wheel feature is a solid upgrade for anyone driving in cold weather. It now works smarter and doesn’t need full Auto mode to function. Tesla made it easier to stay warm and comfortable with less effort.
