Tesla Rolls Out Software Update for Model 3 and Model Y Steering Problem

Tesla is rolling out a software update to fix a power steering issue in 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

What’s the Issue?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) classifies this as a “recall” because it affects safety. But the fix is a simple software update, not a physical repair.

How the Fix Works

Tesla is sending the update over the air. No service visit is needed. Cars just need an internet connection to install it.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

About 376,241 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles running software older than version 2023.38.4.

What Happens with the Steering?

A circuit board in the electronic power steering system can get overstressed. This could cause the power steering assist to stop working when the car comes to a stop and then accelerates again.

If this happens while driving, steering effort won’t change, but a warning will appear. If the car is already stopped, the power steering assist might not work when it starts moving again. The driver can still steer manually.

Reports and Fix Status

Since January 10, Tesla has logged 3,012 warranty claims and 570 field reports about the issue. No crashes or injuries have been reported.
