Tesla is getting ready to release the Model Y L in China. It’s a stretched version of the regular Model Y, and transported units have been seen on the road on their way to local showrooms. Production at Giga Shanghai has already begun.

Photos from Jiangsu show a truck carrying a covered vehicle alongside standard Model Y units. The covered car appears longer and has a different front seat setup. These sightings come just days after reports confirmed that the longer model is already being built, showing Tesla’s quick move from factory to display.

The Model Y L is now part of the newest new energy vehicle list from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). This means buyers can get purchase tax exemptions. This approval is one of the last steps before the model reaches customers.
Main Specs and Features
Details from MIIT filings show:
Battery and range
- 82.0-kWh lithium-ion pack supplied by LG Energy Solution
- Range of 751 km on the CLTC test cycle
- Higher energy density, giving longer travel per charge
Dimensions and space
- 178 mm longer than the current Model Y
- 152 mm increase in wheelbase for more cabin room
- Six-seat option for passenger comfort
Design differences
- “Model Y L” badge with an afterimage style effect on the letter “Y”
- New 19-inch star-pattern wheels
- Minor style updates to set it apart from the standard version

This model is aimed at Chinese buyers who prefer larger vehicles for extra legroom and cargo capacity. Starting sales in China first shows how important the market is for Tesla’s global plans.
The Model Y L is expected to be built later at other Tesla plants, including in Berlin, California, and Texas. Seeing it go from production to showroom trucks in such a short time shows how quickly Tesla can adjust to what local customers want.
