Tesla Rolls Out Model Y L: Six Seats and Extra Comfort

Tesla has released the Model Y L. Orders opened on August 18, and deliveries start in September. The starting price is about $47,180.

The Model Y L is being built in Giga Shanghai. Stores are receiving units. Production is in full swing, not just trial runs. The price is about $3,600 higher than the standard Model Y Long Range version.

Design and size changes

The Model Y L is 4,976 mm long and has a 3,040 mm wheelbase. It’s 179 mm longer than the standard Model Y. Most of the extra length gives more room for passengers.

Interior features

The six-seat Model Y L has captain’s chairs in the second row.

These come with powered armrests that move with a button. The third row can carry passengers up to 1.87 meters tall. Tests show limited comfort for people around 1.70 meters tall.

There’s a black headliner instead of grey. Front seats have better padding and adjustable headrests. You can fold down the second and third rows by pressing a button.

Climate and technology

Four new vents let rear riders control airflow. Heating and cooling work in the first and second rows; the third row has heating only. The display is larger, at 16 inches. The audio system uses 18 speakers.

There is a “Hi Tesla” voice command. Phones can charge wirelessly at up to 50W.

Battery and driving

The battery is 82.0 kWh, made by LG Energy Solution. Driving range is up to 751 km on the CLTC scale. The dual-motor system delivers 340 kW. The car goes from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

The Model Y L enters a market with other six-seat SUVs like the NIO Onvo L90 and Li i8. Tesla’s sales have dropped this year, and the company hopes this new model will attract more family buyers.

Availability

For now, Tesla sells the Model Y L only in Chinese market, though other countries might get it later. Right-hand drive versions could be available in places that import cars from Giga Shanghai.
