Tesla is now offering a new $2,000 software upgrade for its 2026 Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD). It’s called the “Acceleration Boost.” This upgrade is software-based and adds more power to the car’s motor. The goal is to make the vehicle faster without changing any hardware.

This upgrade is for the refreshed 2026 Model Y, often referred to as the “Juniper” version. It increases the car’s horsepower by about 100, cutting the 0-60 mph time from 4.6 seconds to 4.2 seconds. It can be purchased through the Tesla mobile app. Owners don’t need to visit a service center. Tesla has used this kind of upgrade before with other models.

With this change, the Long Range AWD version performs closer to what’s expected from the upcoming Model Y Performance variant, which hasn’t launched yet.

Why It’s Being Offered Now

It seems to be a stopgap until the new Performance model comes out later in 2025. Offering the boost now gives buyers a way to upgrade speed without waiting or buying a more expensive car.

The move fits Tesla’s usual method, selling software upgrades that tap into power already built into the car’s systems. This isn’t new. In 2020, Tesla sold a similar boost for the Model Y Dual Motor AWD for the same $2,000 price. That earlier upgrade also cut down acceleration time using the same idea.

The 2026 Juniper update brought several changes to the Model Y. These include smoother ride quality, better glass for cabin noise, and stronger in-car tech. Adding a performance upgrade gives buyers another choice, especially those who care more about speed than other features.

Bottom Line

Tesla is giving 2026 Model Y Long Range AWD owners a faster car, for a price. It’s a familiar approach for the company. The $2,000 Acceleration Boost brings more power using a software update, not new parts. It’s convenient and cheaper than upgrading to the Performance version. But it may not be worth it for everyone, especially if future models make the boost feel outdated.
