Tesla’s Model Y has clinched Europe’s top-selling vehicle position for September, according to preliminary data from market researcher Dataforce, as reported by Automotive News Europe. The electric SUV recorded 28,680 sales during the month, despite a slight decline of 3.6 percent from August’s figures.
The race for second place remains tight between the Volkswagen Tiguan and Renault Clio, with sales of 20,763 and 20,306 units respectively. However, these rankings could shift once Slovakia and Hungary report their sales figures.
The September performance is particularly noteworthy as Tesla typically sees lower sales during the first month of each quarter. This comes against a backdrop of broader market challenges, with European EV sales dropping 44 percent in August, while overall car sales decreased by 18 percent.
Looking at the broader picture, the Dacia Sandero leads the year-to-date sales with 203,474 deliveries through the first nine months. The Volkswagen Golf follows with 165,370 units, and the Renault Clio with 162,021 units. The Volkswagen T-Roc and Tesla Model Y round out the top performers with 156,803 and 155,428 units respectively.
The Model Y has shown remarkable momentum, rising from ninth place in July to eighth in August, before claiming the top spot in September. This surge is particularly significant as the Model Y was Europe’s best-selling vehicle last year, and appears poised to potentially repeat this achievement.
