Tesla is gearing up to start production of the new Model Y, codenamed “Juniper” or “Opal,” very soon.
This comes just days after the refreshed model debuted in China last week.
Model Y Refresh Launched in China
Last Thursday, Tesla unveiled the latest version of its all-electric crossover, the Model Y, in China.
The launch ended weeks of speculation about whether Tesla would refresh the popular vehicle.
The new Model Y is already available for purchase on Tesla’s website in China and some surrounding markets, like Australia.
New Configurations and Features
Two configurations were introduced: a Rear-Wheel-Drive and an All-Wheel Drive version.
Tesla also rolled out a “Launch Edition,” which includes exclusive materials and badges.
The updated Model Y comes with several new features. Some of these are aimed at improving the Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite.
Expanding Production to Giga Berlin
Now, Tesla seems ready to expand production of the refreshed Model Y to other markets and factories.
According to German media, employees at Gigafactory Berlin have been informed by management that production of the new Model Y will begin as early as Tuesday.
Model Y’s in Europe
This could be a significant move for Tesla. The Model Y was already the best-selling vehicle in Germany in 2024, with 29,896 units sold, according to EU-EVs.
It also dominated the European market last year, with 159,211 units sold across the EU.
The Model 3 came in second, with 81,156 units sold.
Tesla held 15.8 percent of the EU’s electric vehicle market in 2023, surpassing Volkswagen, which had 9.6 percent.
Potential for Repeat Sales
The refreshed design could entice recent buyers to upgrade.
This might lead to a wave of repeat sales for Tesla as it aims to boost deliveries to over two million vehicles this year.
