Tesla may introduce a lower-priced Model Y in China, depending on how well the new Juniper version sells. Industry sources from a Chinese news outlet shared that this more affordable Model Y will keep the same battery, power, and chassis as the current Model Y, which is the Juniper.
Tesla China started delivering the 2025 Model Y Juniper in late February. Right now, the Model Y RWD costs RMB 263,500, while the Long Range AWD variant is priced at RMB 303,500. Early data suggests the 2025 Model Y is selling well. In the week ending March 9, 2025, Tesla China registered 8,700 Model Ys, up from 6,700 two weeks before.
Tesla’s decision to release the cheaper Model Y depends on Juniper sales. While the company plans to keep much of the Juniper design, the lower-priced version will have some changes.
According to CNEV Post, Tesla China is working on this model through “depop,” a process that simplifies configurations for faster production. This Model Y will not carry the Juniper name or have an English name.
Last year, Tesla introduced a more affordable Model 3 in Mexico. That version had textile seats instead of vegan leather, no rear passenger screen, and only white ambient lighting. It also lacked heated and cooled seats, along with a heated steering wheel. These details might hint at the changes coming to the lower-priced Model Y in China.
