Model 3+ Will Offer Over 800 km Range, Tesla Prepares Launch

Tesla has filed a new version of the Model 3 in China, known as the Model 3+. It’s expected to have the longest range of any Tesla sold in the country. If approved quickly, it will be released in September 2025.

What’s in the Filing

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published the vehicle on July 16 in a list open for public comment. The model number is TSL7000BEVBR1. The comment period is open from July 17 to 23. This is one of the last steps before sales can begin.

The new Model 3+ uses a single motor on the rear axle. The peak power is 225 kW. That’s higher than the 194 kW output of the current basic rear-wheel-drive version.

It has the same body as other Model 3 variants made in Tesla’s Shanghai factory: length 4,720 mm, width 1,848 mm, height 1,442 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,875 mm. Top speed is 200 km/h. Curb weight is 1,760 kg.

Battery and Range

The battery comes from LG Energy Solution. It’s a ternary NMC lithium-ion unit, likely the same 78.4 kWh pack used in the Model 3 Long Range AWD and Performance versions.

Using this battery with a single motor instead of two makes the car more efficient. Based on estimates, range should be over 800 km on the CLTC cycle, which is standard for Chinese testing. That would make it the Tesla with the longest driving range in China, higher than the 753 km given to the Long Range AWD.

The Model 3+ should consume about 11.2 kWh per 100 km, which is lower than the 12.1 kWh per 100 km used by the dual-motor version. That helps explain the longer range.

How It’s Different

Tesla already sells three versions of the Model 3 in China:

  • Rear-wheel-drive (LFP battery, 62.5 kWh): 634 km range, starting at RMB 235,500
  • Long Range AWD (NMC battery, 78.4 kWh): 753 km range, starting at RMB 285,500
  • Performance (NMC battery): 623 km range, starting at RMB 339,500

This new Model 3+ uses the Long Range battery but with a single motor. That’s a setup Tesla hasn’t used since January 2020, when it dropped its old Long Range RWD version.

The new version drops the front motor used in AWD models. This lowers the weight and helps boost efficiency.

Expected price is around RMB 270,000 ($37,600). It would sit between the current rear-wheel drive and AWD versions in Tesla’s China lineup.

If approved in this round, the Model 3+ will launch in September 2025. The company has not announced a formal delivery date, but filings show it’s nearly ready for sale.

Sales So Far

Tesla sold 16,636 Model 3 units in China during June 2025. That was 8.35% lower than in June last year, but 20.39% higher than in May.

For the first half of 2025, Tesla delivered 91,919 Model 3s in China. That’s up 30.38% from the same period last year.

Other automakers in China, like Xiaomi, now sell EVs with ranges over 830 km. Tesla’s Model 3+ is clearly aimed at staying in that race for more range.

Combining its largest battery with the more efficient RWD layout, the Model 3+ is set to be the longest-range Tesla ever sold in China. It brings back something that hasn’t been available to local buyers for over five years, a single-motor Model 3 with a big battery.
