Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) is active in the U.S., and a version was launched in China earlier this week. But European Tesla owners are still waiting.
Elon Musk has now explained the reason. Tesla is waiting for regulatory approval before it can bring FSD to Europe. This was a challenge in China but was eventually resolved.

Tesla had planned to launch FSD, or at least a version of it, in Europe last year. But approval is still pending, and there is no exact launch date yet.
Tesla Awaits a Green Light
Tesla has not shared how long it has been waiting for European approval.
The EU’s Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 and updates like Regulation (EU) 2022/1426 set high safety and environmental standards, requiring Tesla to align its FSD technology with these rules before deployment.
Tesla has a strong position in the European EV market. In 2024, the company held 15.8% of the market, according to EU-EVs data. It led over competitors like Volkswagen, BMW, and Volvo.
Other Companies Have Approval
Some automakers already have self-driving features approved in Europe. Ford, for example, got approval for Level 2 self-driving on the Mustang Mach-E in 2023.
Tesla’s system could be more advanced, but it depends on what regulators allow. The version released in China is different from the one in the U.S., so it’s unclear what Europe will approve.
