Elon Musk has often said that Full Self-Driving (FSD) is key to Tesla’s future success. If Tesla can perfect FSD, it could become the most valuable company in the world.
Even though FSD isn’t perfect yet, FSD Supervised is already making roads safer.
Tesla’s Q4 2024 Vehicle Safety Report showed that when drivers used Autopilot, there was one crash for every 5.94 million miles driven.
In the 4th quarter, we recorded one crash for every 5.94 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology. For drivers who were not using Autopilot technology, we recorded one crash for every 1.08 million miles driven. By comparison, the most recent data available from NHTSA and FHWA (from 2023) shows that in the United States there was an automobile crash approximately every 702,000 miles.
In contrast, U.S. data from 2023 showed one crash every 702,000 miles without Autopilot:
In the 2023, 4th quarter, we recorded one crash for every 5.39 million miles driven in which drivers were using Autopilot technology. For drivers who were not using Autopilot technology, we recorded one crash for every 1.00 million miles driven. By comparison, NHTSA and FHWA data from 2023 shows that in the United States there was an automobile crash approximately every 702,000 miles.
One Tesla owner shared how FSD Supervised helped him during a stressful situation. He had to drive his brother-in-law to a hospital 40 miles away at 4 AM.
Both were tired, and his brother-in-law was anxious about surgery. The owner used FSD Supervised to handle the drive while he monitored the system.
He said the trip would have been risky without FSD, but the car got them to the hospital safely.
The owner also mentioned how easy it was to send the hospital’s address from his iPhone to the Tesla.
Once in the car, he started FSD with one button press, and the car drove them directly to the hospital entrance.
He called the experience a “godsend” and said it shows how transformative this technology can be.
