SpaceX has reportedly signed a battery supply agreement with South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution (LGES).
According to reports from South Korean media outlets, the contract will see LGES provide cylindrical lithium-ion batteries to be used in SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft.
An LGES spokesperson confirmed the news, stating,
“We have signed a contract to supply power supply batteries for SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft and are currently developing the product.”
The partnership between SpaceX and LGES is not entirely unexpected, as the South Korean battery maker has an established history of working with the aerospace industry.
In 2016, LGES provided lithium-ion batteries for NASA’s space exploration suits, demonstrating its capabilities in the sector.
Furthermore, LGES is already a key supplier to another Elon Musk-led company, Tesla, producing the automaker’s cutting-edge 4680 battery cells.
This prior relationship likely played a role in SpaceX’s decision to select LGES as a battery provider for the Starship program.
The agreement marks a significant milestone for both companies, as SpaceX aims to make progress on its ambitious plans for the Starship rocket and eventual trips to Mars, while LGES continues to expand its footprint in the aerospace market.
