Tesla gets a boost in China as new vehicle registrations reach a high for the last twelve weeks. For the week of September 15–21, there were 17,300 new Tesla registrations. That’s up 12.7% from the week before. This is Tesla’s best result in China since the start of summer.
Model Y L stands out
The Model Y keeps leading Tesla sales in China with 10,340 registrations that week. The Model Y L, a six-seat, long wheelbase version made for China, added another 850 units. The Model 3 sedan registered 6,060 units.

Orders for the Model Y L have surged since its launch in August. Reports say there have been over 120,000 orders, and some days saw nearly 10,000 orders. Demand is strong enough that if you order now, you may have to wait until November to get the car. September and October are already sold out.
Quarterly trend
Tesla sold 57,152 vehicles in China in August. That’s almost 10% less than the same month last year but still a 41% jump from July. Quarter to date, insurance registrations are up 33.2% from the previous quarter, but they are down 7.8% compared to last year.
Tesla’s year-to-date sales in China are 5.9% below 2024. But Q3 is looking better because of interest in the new Model Y L and improved registrations as summer ends.
The Model Y L costs 339,000 yuan, or about $46,700. It has an 82 kWh battery, about 327 miles of range, and can go 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds. Cargo space is nearly 90 cubic feet, and it is only about 8% more expensive than the regular Model Y. The Model Y L is made just for China and aims at families wanting more space.
Analyst forecast
Some analysts now expect Tesla to beat global delivery estimates for the third quarter. Wall Street targets for Q3 deliveries have gone up, in part because the Model Y L is driving new demand in China. This model could help Tesla improve its position in China’s busy electric car market and stabilize sales later this year.
Tesla’s new Model Y L has helped it regain ground in China. Weekly registrations are at a recent high. The Model Y L brought in big orders and appears popular with families wanting a bigger electric SUV. Sales have not fully matched last year’s highs, but Q3 is looking stronger. The Model Y L is now sold out through October, with orders booked into November.
