Cybercab now hailable in Tesla Robotaxi app with RGB light sync and horn controls

Tesla has released a major update to its Robotaxi app on both iPhone and Android, adding explicit support for the new Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas. The update arrives on the same day as Tesla’s invite‑only “Exclusive Access: Cybercab” launch event at Gigafactory Texas, where selected riders are experiencing the first public trips in the steering‑wheel‑free, two‑seat vehicle.

The latest Robotaxi app versions on iOS and Android, now list Cybercab as a selectable, hailable vehicle type within the existing Tesla Robotaxi app for riders in Austin. A new seating‑capacity indicator also appears in the interface, showing whether the incoming vehicle is a two‑seat Cybercab or a five‑seat Model Y. Also, the screen glows to match the Cybercab’s RGB front light bar, an arrow points to its location, and you can flash the lights or honk the horn to identify it.

Cybercab is Tesla’s first purpose‑built robotaxi, a compact two‑seat electric vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, designed to operate at Level 4 autonomy under Texas regulations. Key specifications reported for the production Cybercab include seating for two passengers, a 163 kW / 219 hp front motor, a 47.6 kWh battery with 326V nominal voltage, curb weight of 3,113 lbs (1,412 kg), estimated range of roughly 293-300 miles on an EPA‑adjusted cycle, efficiency near 165 Wh/mile, and pilot production that began in February 2026 at Gigafactory Texas.

The vehicle relies on Tesla’s AI4 compute platform and a camera‑based Full Self‑Driving stack tuned for robotaxi operations, rather than a human driver.

Austin launch and regulatory backdrop

Tesla confirmed a formal Cybercab launch event in Austin on September 3, 2026, promoted with “Exclusive Access: Cybercab” branding and limited to invitees drawn from Robotaxi riders and sweepstakes entrants. Ahead of the event, Tesla Robotaxi, LLC added Cybercab VINs to Texas’s official automated‑vehicle registry, and public records show an initial batch of seven cars, later expanded to 45, authorized under the same commercial credentialing used for the existing robotaxi fleet.

Registering Cybercab under the state’s Motor Carrier Credentialing System clears the vehicles to operate commercially in Texas, even though the September 3 event itself is a product launch rather than a new federal safety approval.

Tesla’s Robotaxi service has been operating in Austin since June 2025 using driverless Model Y vehicles, and earlier this year the company expanded unsupervised rides to cover the entire Austin metropolitan area, more than 4,000 square miles, within the app’s geofence. Texas law already allows Level 4 automated operation without human controls under specific conditions, and Tesla has been running unsupervised Robotaxi rides, without a safety monitor in the car, across the metro, including trips to Austin–Bergstrom International Airport.

How the update changes the rider experience

With the new app versions, iPhone and Android users in the Austin service area can now see Cybercab as an option within the Robotaxi app where Tesla enables access, alongside or in place of the existing Model Y robotaxis. Initially, Cybercab rides are expected to be limited to launch attendees and early trial groups, meaning most Austinites will continue to receive Model Y robotaxis even though the app now understands the new vehicle type.

For riders inside Tesla’s current Austin service area, the practical change is choice, since solo riders and pairs can opt for a Cybercab, which is likely to be positioned as the lower‑cost option given its smaller battery and single‑motor architecture, while groups of three or more will still need to select a Model Y.

Availability beyond Austin

Tesla already lists Robotaxi service in multiple Texas cities, including Austin, Dallas, and Houston, as well as Florida locations such as Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, all currently served by Model Y robotaxis. While Cybercab units have been spotted staged in Dallas and on Austin streets ahead of the launch, Tesla has not yet announced when Cybercab support in the Robotaxi app will extend beyond the Austin metro.

To use the Robotaxi app, riders must sign in with a Tesla Account, ensure they are within the app’s highlighted service area, and then request an autonomous ride to their destination, confirming the vehicle’s license plate on arrival.
