The latest software update gives car wash mode a split-screen layout. The vehicle graphic now sits on one side, and the checklist with controls sits on the other side.
The older version relied more on nested menus and smaller touch targets. Now core actions are placed on a single screen with clearer grouping, so drivers can quickly confirm that the car is ready before entering a wash bay.

The interface now uses fewer visual elements and clearer spacing. As a result, the screen is easier to scan during short stops at a wash. Key items such as window state, mirror position, and charge port lock sit together, which helps the driver follow a simple mental checklist.
Short labels and a more direct layout cut down on reading time. At the same time, the vehicle visualization supports the checklist by giving an instant sense of what is active or closed.
Easier control of water shields
Water-related protections are grouped in a way that makes sense at a glance. Car wash mode now lets drivers toggle all water shields and related items through a clearer set of switches and indicators. These include window closure, charge port lock, and hatch sealing features that reduce the risk of water entering the cabin or trunk.
The system still performs several steps automatically when car wash mode is turned on. It closes all windows, locks the charge port, disables automatic wipers, and sets the HVAC system to recirculation to limit outside air and moisture. The new interface simply makes it easier to see that these protections are active.
Status indicators for readiness
Colored status dots support the checklist. If something is not in the right state, such as an open window or unlocked charge port, the indicator turns red so the driver can correct it before moving forward.
These indicators work in real time. For instance, if a window opens after car wash mode is active, the system can raise a warning so the driver can react before entering the wash tunnel.
Faster access to wiper controls
Automatic wipers can create problems in a wash tunnel, so quick control here matters. Car wash mode now brings wiper-related settings closer to the main screen, instead of hiding them deeper in the control tree.
This direct access matters for both front and rear wipers. Sprayer actions and automatic responses to water on the glass can be managed more clearly, which avoid damage if brushes or equipment contact the arms or blades.
Clearer free roll function
Free roll is a key part of using a belt or track-style automatic wash. Tesla has moved the “Enable Free Roll” control to a more obvious place at the bottom of the car wash mode screen with a stronger visual treatment. This button allows the car to behave like it is in Neutral, while still handling safety logic in the background.
The updated car wash mode applies across Tesla’s current vehicles and does not rely on special hardware. Owners of Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X can all access the refined interface through the latest 2025 holiday software release.
