Tesla says next FSD update will remember where drivers park

Elon Musk wrote on X that upcoming Tesla Full Self-Driving releases will learn parking choices at places such as home, the office, and school drop-off areas, with the goal of cutting down takeovers at the end of a trip. And Musk said destination parking is now the main reason drivers intervene, adding that “critical safety interventions are extremely rare.”

Musk’s latest comment centers on a simple change. The car would learn where a driver usually wants to stop at repeat destinations instead of settling for the first open spot it finds. That could cover a regular driveway position at home, a usual area at work, or a preferred curb for school drop-off. And it takes aim at a part of FSD that owners have long treated as unfinished, even after the rest of a trip goes smoothly.

What Tesla has already added

Tesla has already moved in this direction with Arrival Options in FSD Supervised v14.1, which let drivers pick how the car should finish a route. Those options include parking lot, street, driveway, parking garage, and curbside, and the system can plan a different route from the start based on that final choice. Then, at repeat destinations, Tesla said the system can remember arrival behavior and use its reasoning model to choose what it calls an intuitive default.

Why takeovers still happen

Owners have said destination parking remains a common reason to step in, with the car at times heading for spots that feel inconvenient or poorly placed for the destination. In some cases, users have reported the vehicle aiming for spaces far from a storefront entrance or edging near spots a human driver would avoid. But even when drivers drop a navigation pin near the place they want, FSD has still been known to grab the first acceptable space it sees.

This latest comment lines up with Musk’s earlier remarks from February, when he said FSD already handles more than 99% of his personal driving and that his remaining disengagements come from “small nav issues and parking preferences.” He said at that time that those items were set to be addressed in the 14.3 branch. And the new parking-memory feature looks like a direct extension of that plan.
