Tesla prepares smaller electric pickup for world markets

Tesla is working on a compact electric pickup. The company wants to offer a truck that fits in cities and other countries. Today, the Cybertruck is too big for many places outside the U.S. and UAE.

Design studio director Lars Moravy shared this news at an event in San Mateo. He said Tesla designers in Hawthorne have started working on a new pickup. Moravy did not call it a “smaller Cybertruck.” He used the term ‘pickup,’ which signals this may be a fresh design, not just a shrinking of the Cybertruck.

Benefits of a smaller pickup

The Cybertruck’s size limits where it can be sold. A smaller pickup would work in Europe and Asia, where roads are narrower and cars must meet strict size rules. City drivers want better parking and easier turns too. Smaller pickups can help with both.

A compact pickup opens new possibilities for Tesla. It could offer different designs for families, fleets, and possible robotaxi use. A compact size would also fit better in Tesla’s robotaxi plans.

Design ideas so far

Tesla showed early sketches of compact pickups at the Petersen Museum before.

Now, the company is looking at using its next car platform that supports cheaper, faster production. The pickup would serve both personal and business needs. Moravy talked about moving “people and goods,” so the design may help with city deliveries and regular driving.

The Cybertruck leads U.S. electric truck sales. A smaller truck would let Tesla reach more buyers, those who don’t want or need a big vehicle. Starting from scratch could help meet European safety rules, which speeds up approval. Rival carmakers, like Ford and Chevrolet, are launching their own compact electric pickups. Tesla’s move will put more pressure on them.

Moravy did not give a timeline. His comments show the team is working on real ideas, not just talking. Tesla cars usually take three years from reveal to mass sales. A debut around 2027 would fit with Tesla’s next big releases, including the robotaxi.
