Tesla brings V2L power option to Model Y L

Tesla just gave its Model Y L a big update. The car can now provide electricity to things outside the vehicle. This change arrived with the latest 2025.32.300 software update released in China on October 31.

And while you need Tesla’s special adapter, this lets the Model Y L share its battery with appliances, tools, or even other electric vehicles, making it useful for blackout backups or camping trips.

How V2L works for everyday life

With V2L, the Model Y L acts like a moving generator. Plug in with the adapter, and you get usable energy. Owners aren’t just limited to charging phones. Now you can run a fridge, a grill, or power tools straight from the car while outdoors or at home.

The adapter should be available soon in China. In other countries, similar features already exist on cars from BYD, Hyundai, Kia, and others, but Tesla is catching up. The Cybertruck and new Model Y Performance have related options.

Other update perks

Tesla added more changes in this batch. Dog Mode now goes lower, keeping pets cooler in hot weather. Owners can now personalize the “Rave Cave” entertainment menu. There’s a new energy-saving Low Power Mode, which helps lower battery drain when parked. However, some features work only on certain models, so not every car will get all settings at once. The rollout depends on the region and specific trim.

Interest in Tesla’s Model Y L is climbing fast in China. September figures showed 8,221 sold, placing it fourth in the mid-to-large SUV market, behind Leapmotor C16, Li Auto L6, and Xiaomi YU7 (which took first with 22,244 units). Despite a higher price than many local competitors, the Model Y L is still drawing buyers.

What makes V2L useful

This feature can handle camping needs, job sites, and power emergencies. The Model Y L’s adapter delivers energy at up to 2.4 kW through its outlets, enough for many gadgets and small appliances.

You can run basic things like lights, laptops, or small kitchen equipment. Other EVs, like the Cybertruck, give more output, but the Model Y L’s update covers most everyday needs.

Future energy features

V2L turns the car into a valuable battery for owners. But Tesla is already testing broader systems like vehicle-to-grid (V2G), which could someday let cars help balance the local power supply or reduce home electricity bills. These functions are not all available today, but the new update points toward bigger possibilities for both Tesla and its customers. Other brands are further along in these power features, so expect more EVs supporting bidirectional charging soon.

Tesla uses over-the-air updates to bring new perks to existing vehicles. So, Owners who got the car months ago now have new power options, without needing to change cars or buy special tools.
