Oregon Tesla owners get new 50% FSD insurance discount from Lemonade

Tesla drivers in Oregon can now slash their insurance premiums by roughly half when using Full Self-Driving, as Lemonade’s first-of-its-kind Autonomous Car insurance product goes live in the state.

Lemonade co-founder and president Shai Wininger confirmed the Oregon launch on social media platform X, writing: “And… we’re ON. Lemonade’s Autonomous Car for Tesla FSD is now live in Oregon. Tesla drivers in Oregon can now get ~50% off their Tesla FSD-driven miles + the best car insurance experience in the US, bar none”.

The Oregon rollout follows the product’s initial debut in Arizona on January 26, making it the second state to receive the program. It marks a significant milestone in the evolving relationship between autonomous driving technology and the insurance industry.

How the discount works

Lemonade’s Autonomous Car insurance operates on a hybrid pricing model combining a fixed base rate with a variable per-mile charge. When Tesla’s FSD software is actively controlling the vehicle, the per-mile charge drops by approximately 50%. The insurer says this discount is grounded in Tesla’s safety data, which shows that FSD-engaged miles are roughly twice as safe as manually driven miles.

“Traditional insurers treat a Tesla like any other car, and AI like any other driver,” Wininger said. “But a car that sees 360 degrees, never gets drowsy, and reacts in milliseconds can’t be compared to a human”.

Critically, there is no minimum FSD usage threshold. Drivers who engage FSD even occasionally receive the discounted rate for those specific miles, while manually driven miles are billed at standard competitive rates. Coverage and claims handling remain identical regardless of whether FSD or the human driver was in control at the time of an incident.

Tesla data partnership powers the product

The insurance product is the result of a technical collaboration with Tesla, which grants Lemonade access to vehicle telemetry data via Tesla’s Fleet API. The system captures second-by-second data, distinguishing between autonomous and human-driven miles while also factoring in the vehicle’s FSD software version and sensor performance.

“We are analyzing this at an extremely detailed level, capturing every minute and second of your driving experience with your Tesla,” Wininger told Reuters. “We receive millions of signals transmitted from the vehicle into our systems, which inform our pricing structure”. Wininger clarified that no financial transactions are involved between Lemonade and Tesla regarding the shared data.

Notably, Lemonade’s 50% discount significantly exceeds Tesla’s own insurance program, which caps FSD-related discounts at around 10% and only for drivers who use FSD on more than half their miles.

Eligibility and requirements

The program is currently limited to Tesla vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 or newer, running firmware version 2025.44.25.5 or later. Drivers must provide explicit permission for Lemonade to connect to their vehicle’s onboard systems. Policyholders can also bundle their Tesla coverage with Lemonade’s renters, homeowners, pet, or life insurance products for additional savings.

Lemonade supports households with a mix of Teslas and non-FSD vehicles from other manufacturers under a single policy.

Lemonade has pledged that insurance premiums will continue to drop as Tesla’s FSD software improves. “Beyond the product announcement today, we’re also announcing our commitment to the Tesla community — the safer FSD software becomes, the more our prices will drop,” Wininger said.

The timing is notable as Tesla recently eliminated the option to purchase FSD as a one-time software license, shifting to a $99-per-month subscription model as of February 14. Lemonade’s insurance savings could help offset that recurring cost for Tesla owners who rely on FSD regularly.

Additional states are expected to follow Oregon and Arizona, though Lemonade has not yet disclosed a specific expansion timeline. Tesla owners in eligible states can get a quote through the Lemonade app or online at tesla.lemonade.com/fsd.
