Tesla’s premium six-seat Model Y L debuts a next-generation audio algorithm that no other Tesla model currently offers.
Tesla has introduced a groundbreaking audio feature called Immersive Sound X exclusively for the Model Y L, the brand’s extended-wheelbase six-seat SUV. The feature represents a significant step forward from Tesla’s existing Immersive Sound system, bringing a proprietary 3D audio processing algorithm to the cabin.
What is Immersive Sound X?
Immersive Sound X is a new 3D audio algorithm that uses a proprietary technique called sound eXtraction to analyze and spatially reposition audio within the cabin. Rather than simply widening the stereo field, the technology places the listener in front of a detailed soundstage within what Tesla calls an “Immersive space” creating the sensation of sitting in a concert hall or studio environment while driving.
The feature was first revealed by Tesla China in October 2025, emerging from comments on the Model Y L’s launch coverage, and has since been confirmed as exclusive to this model. Notably, it is not available on the refreshed standard Model Y or the Model 3.
One of the most user-friendly aspects of the system is the Immersive Slider, which gives drivers granular control over the depth of the 3D effect. Users can adjust the size of the immersive space to match personal listening preferences, from a subtle enhancement to a full enveloping soundstage.
When set to Auto mode, the system intelligently adapts the level of immersion based on the type of content being played. This means a podcast or audiobook will receive a more restrained treatment, while a high-fidelity music track or film score can be rendered with full spatial depth automatically, without any user input.
Hardware that makes it possible
Immersive Sound X is powered by the Model Y L’s upgraded 18-speaker + 1 subwoofer audio system, three more speakers than the standard Model Y AWD’s 15-speaker setup. The additional speaker count includes redesigned top-mounted speakers and a centre console speaker, all Tesla-designed and tuned in-house.
This hardware advantage is what separates the Model Y L’s audio experience from the rest of the Tesla lineup. The standard Model Y’s Immersive Sound, which has offered slider controls and an Auto mode since 2021, does not use the sound eXtraction algorithm, making Immersive Sound X a meaningfully distinct and more advanced feature.
Originally launched in China in August 2025 at ¥339,000 (~$47,000 USD), the Model Y L quickly sold out through October on the strength of over 35,000 first-day orders. The vehicle has since expanded to Australia and New Zealand, becoming the first Tesla offered in those markets with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology and marking the first three-row Tesla available there since the Model X was withdrawn in 2020.
With EU type approval secured and South Korea recently greenlighted, the Model Y L, and its exclusive Immersive Sound X feature is on a clear path to global availability.
