Tesla is letting Model 3 owners in the US bring back a control they lost in recent updates.
In 2023, Tesla dropped the turn signal stalk on the refreshed Model 3 Highland. Turn signals moved to touch buttons on the steering wheel. Some drivers said these buttons made everyday driving tougher, especially in busy or difficult spots. Driving instructors and safety experts agreed, saying the change was confusing for students. Some driving schools in Norway stopped using the Model 3 for lessons because of the switch to buttons.
Safety officials in Europe responded too. Euro NCAP will require physical controls for things like turn signals and hazard lights to qualify for a five-star safety rating by 2026. They said moving these functions to screens or buttons increases the risk for drivers, whose eyes may leave the road.
Tesla listened. The company began offering stalk retrofits in China in August 2025, for about $350. Later, Europe got a retrofit kit at a higher price, but installation at Tesla service centers was included.
All new Model 3 cars in the US now come standard with a turn signal stalk. New US Model 3 vehicles also have a front bumper camera. This camera gives more visibility and may help with parking and autonomous driving features. Owners of older cars cannot get a camera retrofit, which some say is disappointing.
The newest Model Y in 2025 kept a turn signal stalk too. Tesla appears to be listening and making changes based on feedback.
Tesla Model 3 stalk US retrofit
For those interested, the cost for US owners is $595. The US retrofit kit comes with a new steering wheel (without turn signal buttons), a stalk, and a control module.

Tesla handles installation at its service centers. The stalk works only for turn signals, other functions like high beams stay as buttons on the wheel.
