Canada Considers 100% Tariffs on Tesla to Counter U.S. Trade Policies

A former Canadian minister wants Canada to hit back at the U.S. with 100% tariffs on Tesla and other American products.

Chrystia Freeland, who served as finance minister and is now running to lead the Liberal Party, says Canada should respond to U.S. tariffs with its own.

She suggests a 100% tariff on all Tesla vehicles, along with U.S. wine, beer, and spirits.

The White House confirmed plans to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting this weekend.

Freeland says Canada should fight back with a list of retaliatory tariffs covering $200 billion worth of U.S. goods.

“Canada must threaten to impose a 100% tariff on all Tesla vehicles and a 100% tariff on U.S. wine, beer, and spirits if unfair tariffs are imposed on Canadians tomorrow,”

she said Friday.

She also wants Canada to team up with other countries to push back. If she becomes Prime Minister, she plans to call a summit to discuss a united response.

Freeland says the tariffs should focus on products from states that voted for Trump and businesses owned by his wealthy allies. She believes this would put enough pressure on the U.S. to reverse the tariffs.

Not everyone in Canada’s government agrees. Liberal candidate Mark Carney says a less aggressive response would be better.

The U.S. is also planning 10% tariffs on Chinese goods. This could affect materials used in electric vehicle batteries.
