Tesla’s grip on the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) market is still ironclad.
In 2024, the company sold 633,762 EVs, more than triple the combined sales of its two closest competitors, General Motors (GM) and Ford.
Even with a slight dip in year-over-year sales, Tesla’s dominance is undeniable.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Tesla: 633,762 EVs sold
- GM: 112,897 EVs sold (including Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC models)
- Ford: 97,865 EVs sold
That means Tesla outsold GM and Ford 3-to-1 combined. Other automakers like Hyundai, Kia, Rivian, and Honda trailed far behind.
Tesla’s Top Performers
The Model Y was Tesla’s star player, racking up 372,613 sales in 2024.
The Model 3 wasn’t far behind, with 189,903 units sold. Even the Cybertruck made a splash in its first full year, selling 38,965 units.
The U.S. EV Market
Tesla’s 2024 sales dipped 1.1% year-over-year. However, the U.S. EV market overall grew significantly.
However, Fourth-quarter EV sales surged 15.2% year-over-year, pushing the total number of EVs sold for the year to a record 1.3 million.
While Tesla’s numbers slipped, the broader market continued to expand.
Out of 68 models available, 24 saw sales increases, and 17 new models were introduced.
On the other hand, some models like the Chevy Bolt and Mazda MX-30 were discontinued, which led to declines in their sales.
