Tesla simplifies external charging with MultiPass feature

Tesla introduces MultiPass. This new feature lets Tesla owners use their Tesla account to charge at non-Tesla charging stations. It launched in the Netherlands this week. Drivers can search for chargers, start a charging session, and see their charging history in the Tesla app.

Tesla owners activate charging either through the app or by tapping their Tesla key card at the charger. You don’t need to set up separate accounts or extra cards for third-party networks. All charging activity, whether on Tesla stations or third-party sites shows up in the app. Users pay through their default payment method in the app. Prices still vary by charge point and operator.

Why Tesla did this

Max de Zegher, Tesla’s Director of Charging in North America, pointed out that many don’t want more accounts or charging cards sent in the mail. He said: “Nobody likes creating more accounts with payment details and passwords. For charging, this can even mean needing a third-party charging card mailed to your house. Starting in the Netherlands today, your Tesla App and your existing (!) Tesla keycard can start charging at third-party chargers. We’ll expand this to more countries quickly if customers love it. To make ownership effortless, the Tesla App should really be the only thing you need.”

Owners need to enable MultiPass for each Tesla key card they want to use. The Tesla app walks you through activation. Each activated card can then start charging at supported locations by tapping the charger. Charging sessions and receipts post in your Tesla app history so nothing gets lost.

Tesla doesn’t control prices for third-party chargers. Charge point operators choose their own rates. Tesla acts as an agent, payments go through your Tesla account but the cost still comes from the third-party network.

Tesla started in the Netherlands because it has a strong charging network and regulations make it easier. The company says MultiPass will go to other European countries first, then North America. For now, there’s no date for a US launch but the company is watching feedback from Dutch users.

Pop culture reference

The MultiPass name refers to The Fifth Element movie, where “Multipass” was a convenient ID card used for everything. Tesla wants MultiPass to be the simple, all-in-one tool for charging.

MultiPass removes the need for apps, cards, and new accounts when charging at other networks. Charge, see your history, and pay directly from your Tesla app and key card. Expansion will depend on customer adoption and market readiness.
